Tips to Avoid Roofing Scams, According to a Professional Roofing Contractor

Common Roofing Scams and How to Avoid Them

Many homeowners fall victim to scams when it comes to their roofs. More often than not, these scams leave homeowners short on money and stuck with a bad roof on their homes. An unethical roofing contractor can be hard to spot. To help you out, here are some of the common scams you might encounter and solutions on how to avoid them:

Storm Chasers

After a big storm, many homeowners will think about getting their roofing systems checked for any kind of damage. These homeowners actually fall prey to many opportunistic scammers or more popularly known as storm chasers. These “contractors” will often travel from one home to another and passing out leaflets that will often say that it offers to repair or replace roofing systems that may be damaged. In many cases, they tend to check roofs that are not even damaged at all. To avoid scams like this, just make sure that you do not rush into anything.

Low Starting Bid

You will be amazed when contractors will start to offer you a very low price that is often far lower than the other local competitors. However, when the service begins, sometimes the price will start to creep up and that’s not right! Reputable contractors will provide you with a detailed estimate of all the costs during the service. The estimate will serve as a binding agreement. Failure to present you with one is a big red flag.

Mysterious Damage

One day, a roofer comes knocking at your door telling you that he is seeing some damage on your roof. He will tell you vague damage that you can’t really notice, but he will claim that it is a major issue. Stop him before he starts to whip out his ladder! Shady roofers are known to claim that there is damage to a roof when there are times they actually create the damage themselves! Never let any roof up on your roof unless you were the one who contacted them.
